I also installed GNOME on both computers, but it does not have this problem. I also upgraded my laptop from Debian 8 to Debian 9 and have the same problem. Afterwards, I noticed a line running horizontally through the bottom of the screen. I did a fresh install of Debian 9 XFCE on my desktop computer.
